Workshop for informal educators 2012

May 14th to June 1st 2012

Do you work in a park, summer camp or a nature interpretation centre? You would like to become more familiar with the sky in order to organise more astronomy activities with your group?

Then this workshop is for you!

Our online workshop for informal educator lasts three weeks and there are many activities every week. Most of it can be done on your own time, but there is a scheduled 1-hr videochat every week. The only thing you need is a computer with high-speed internet.

Here's an example of what will be covered each week:

  • Activities to learn the sky, to be done under the real sky or with planetarium software.
  • Activities: these activities will help you understand certain concepts and can be reused with your audience.
  • Live videochat with scientific information: guided tour of the Universe, introduction to the starfinder and planetarium software, what's happening in the sky...

Astronomy is a very vast subject and it would be impossible to cover all of it in a few hours. Our goal is that at the end of our workshop, you will be more confident offering astronomy activities to your audience and will know where to go for more information.

At the end of this workshop:

  • You will be able to recognize the summer constellations in the sky.
  • You will know how to use a starfinder and planetarium software like Stellarium.
  • You will be more familiar with many basic astronomy concepts.
  • You will have discovered many activities and tricks to make you astronomy events more alive.
  • You will have developed a constellation tour that is ready to use with you audience.
  • And even more!
